Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project

The Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project works to restore and conserve threatened forest land in Roanoke Electric’s service area by increasing forest-owner income and land asset values. The project engages youth and young adults in learning what they need to know to advance sustainable forestry on their family lands and provides role models, mentoring and internship opportunities to begin cultivating future natural resource professionals.

Donations may be made directly to the Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project on its website at https://www.recforestry.org/donate or by clicking on the donate or mail-in options listed at the bottom of this page and instructing that your donation is in support of the Forestry Project.

Community Solar Low Income Assistance Program

Nearly 30 percent of Roanoke Electric Co-op member-owner households have an income of less than $25,000 a year. Many of these households in our community struggle with paying the monthly power bill. The co-op, working through The Roanoke Center, has created a community solar low-income assistance tiered sponsorship program via its Roanoke SolarShare initiative to help member-owners facing financial hardship. At the first tier, known as the Ambassador level, co-op residential and commercial member-owners can make a one-time donation and/or support a fellow member-owner household in need by paying the monthly $20 subscription fee for a block of ten panels and donating the value of the solar output. The solar output, estimated to be $19.80 monthly will be credited on a qualifying household’s monthly utility bill to support health and safety repairs for participants in the co-op’s Upgrade to $ave home energy efficiency program.

The following sponsorship levels are available to help provide assistance through Roanoke SolarShare:

  • Ambassador: the subscriber pays the monthly $20 subscription fee and donates the value of the solar electricity output to a low-income member. The low-income member-owner will have no subscription fee and instead will see the credit for the output of the 10 solar panel as a monthly reduction on their utility bill anticipated to be $19.80 and ascribed to the Roanoke SolarShare low-income community solar project.
  • Leader: provides for the opportunity for business and nonprofits to provide a one-time or annual contribution of larger amounts to support to Roanoke EC’s low-income member-owners through 2034.
  • Contributor (individual or business) may provide a tax-deductible donation of $20 or more to provide a one-time $19.82 credit to a co-op member-owner’s utility bill. Contributor donations will be bundled with other contributors for home health and safety repairs necessary in order for the co-op to make the Upgrade to $ave energy efficiency upgrades to the home that will result in longer term savings for the member-owner.

The following table illustrates the financial hardship assistance participation levels, monthly investment cost and resulting financial savings for the participating member-owner in need of assistance:

Upgrade to $ave Assistance Program

The Roanoke Center also makes it possible to sponsor a co-op member-owner participating in the Upgrade to $ave program. These sponsorships go directly toward the cost of co-payment needed for participating member-owner to buy down the cost of the energy efficiency upgrades to their homes that will further save money on their monthly energy bill. Further, these sponsorships often support urgent repairs needed at some member-owner residences that will make homes safer and eligible to receive the full Upgrade to $ave energy efficiency upgrades for longer term savings.

In addition to the Upgrade to $ave program page link above, learn more about the program and watch video of participating member-owners and The Roanoke Center Executive Director Sondra Dickens discussing the quality-of-life improvements and cost-savings benefits resulting from participation in this energy-efficiency savings initiative.
